Communications Committee

From Drexel Smart House

Jump to: navigation, search

The Communications group is responsible for promoting Drexel Smart House to the people both in and outside of the university. Additionally, the group is responsible for event planning and will handle all media relations.

And some more vague goals and responsibilities of this committee:

  • A - Ensure all communications adhere to the previously developed guidelines, policies, and schedules. This includes events, news media relations, advertising, print publications, and our online and social media presence.
  • B - Work with Drexel University's Office of University Relations, and Office of Government and Community Relations, and Office of Institutional Advancement in promoting the Drexel Smart House, including the organization, programming, incubator, designs, technologies, and spin-off companies.

Essentially, it is the task of this committee to keep DSH in the news, manage our visual identity, and provide us with valuable strategic, editorial and design services.
Is this list more helpful for "getting started"? As you may note, one of our first high priority tasks is student recruitment. In other words, your committee will need more help, just as the other committees also need more personnel.

Press

Do we want a single top-level Press page, all press as a section or subpage of this committee, or a press page for each committee?

Current Projects

Publicity

  • Publicizing a freshmen design forum to occur during week 1 or 2 of Spring Term
  • Developing guidelines and a strategic plan for marketing, branding, and communication.
  • Developing a blogging, newsletter, and formal press release schedule. In particular, we would like to provide weekly summary updates through a newsletter distributed within the University. Additionally, in order to increase communications between committees, a more detailed version (superset) should be distributed within the organization weekly.

Promotional Materials

  • Prepare initial brochures and other marketing materials for obtaining students, sponsorships, partnerships, and customers. Will be distributed at research day, earth day, conferences such as PaGGP, GBA, and Greenbuild, etc.
  • Arrange for (preferably donated) marketing related materials, such as printing / brochures, business cards(!), t-shirts, polos, etc.
  • Developing templates for presentations, newsletters, and other promotional materials.
  • Preparing a large board for advertising our sponsors and partners

Events Planning

  • Planning the Drexel Smart House Design Unveiling, a large event with representatives of Drexel administration, faculty, staff, and alumni, the Powelton Village community, industry sponsors and partners, and local media / press coverage. Essentially, this event is our official "Grand Opening", to occur in the next few months.
  • Planning a recurring (weekly or biweekly) Drexel Smart House happy hour sponsored by alumni, or partners / sponsors from industry. This idea originated from an alumni who also offered to sponsor our first happy hour.
  • Planning recurring events for the general Drexel University population. This could include a speaker series, breakout workshops, technology demonstrations, a movie night (Disney Smart House movie, anyone? :-P), student forums, and more. We should hold a general meeting such as this at least once per term.

Editing/Reviewing

  • Reviewing the Operations Plan Annotated Table of Contents and Executive Presentation for grammar, content, aesthetics, and market appeal. Identify weak spots, redundancies, etc.
  • Reviewing the wiki for grammar, content, aesthetics, etc. Identify weak spots, redundancies, inconsistencies, etc.

Operational Structure

  • Work with the Information Management group to develop a stable platform for communication, collaboration, and knowledge maintenance, from which publicly available information can easily be kept current. Out of scope?
