Project/3425 Race
From Drexel Smart House
Overview To Date
The Drexel Smart House property located at 3425 Race Street in Philadelphia is the first residence that our organization identified and secured for becoming a Smart House. Our acquisition of this property was achieved through collaboration with members of the Drexel University administration. A request for proposals (rfp) competition was first released to our student body in July/August of 2007 and the selection of two of these submissions, to be further developed, occurred in November of 2007. The two design teams then worked with the executive council to plan a course for the Spring of 2008 that would bring additional engineers and design students in to collaborate on the development of the two designs, with the goal of one design being selected for continuing into the construction phase. The selection of this team occurred in August of 2008. Since then, our design team and our executive council have worked in collaboration with Drexel's administration and Planning Design & Construction to secure donations of materials and services and to develop construction documentation for the project.
Organization of the Project
Currently many members and committees of Drexel Smart House are involved in supporting the development of our property at 3425 Race Street. Some are working to promote the project through the creation of promotional materials, others are assisting with the financing for the project, etc. In terms of design and construction, we have a sub-committee of our design committee, consisting of the winning student design team, that is working directly with Barbara Clarke, Kim Miller, Nikolaos Kotopoulos, and others from Planning Design & Construction.
