Summary
One way of creating the backbone are through clusters, a group of loosely coupled computers that act together to provide processing power that exceeds a stand-alone computer. The use of loosely coupled computers is known as distributed computing, a method of computer processing where programs are broken down and processed on separate networked computers. The advantages of this method over a stand-alone computer are as follows: openness (the ability for a system to interact with another system), scalability, and increased overall processing efficiency.
